DEFENCE OF THE EMPIRE.
(Received July 13, 0.30 a.m.) LONDON, July 12. At a banquet to Sir A. J. Cockburn, the retiring South Australian AgentGeneral, there was a large number of guests, including the Agents-Genoral. Lord Strathcona presided. ' Sir Charles Dilke, in the course of a speech, said in the event of a Continental war, Australia would act on the offensive not the defensive. Her mounted forces would be invaluable in defending when calls on the fleet made it difficult to convey British troops. Several speakers expressed tie hope that the guest of the evening would return as High Commissioner for Australia.
