HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
The committee of the Wellington ilortural and Florists’ Society met on Friday evening to make final arrangements for thdfortlicaming chrvantherhum and , fruit show. Mr W. H. P. Barber was .in the chair. Judges were appointed as follows • Cut flowers, Messrs McKay, Taylor and Jay; pot plants, Messrs Glen and Wilkinson ; fruit and vegetables, Messrs B. Bramley and Travers. A sub-committee was appointed to take all show arrangements in hand. It was decided that the prizes for the table decorations should be first £1 ]os, second £l, and third 10s. The prizes will be awairded in accordance with the votes given by the visitors present on the two days of the show. Mrs J. Burne has undertaken, with the assistance of other ladies, the arrangements for the afternoon tea, wlrch will be dispensed at a small charge. Regarding the conference of horticulturists and pomologists, to be hold at Dunedin, it was resolved that the society should be represented by Mr Barbel-. Another member of the society will also attend. Mr C. Hill and the secretary were empowered to arrange a small programme of musical items for the two evenings of the show.
From reports heceived, the chrysanthemums—the main feature of the show—will be quite up to the standard of former years, and it is hoped that there v.ill be some fresh exhibitors from the country districts. The competition for the Davies Challenge Cup, at present held by Mr W. H. P. Barber, will be keen. Should it again be won by 31 r Barber it wall become his property. A new feature null be the giving of prizes for cut chrysanthemum blooms to bo shown in vases: both coloured and white varieties. This'method of staging is gaining favour at exhibitions in Fairland. Special attention will be g'vcn to the exhibits of hand bouquets arranged by children attending any public or private school,,
