MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.

' Mr Allan On* addressed an open-air meeting in Mercer street on Saturday evening. The candidate, in a racy speech, which occupied an hour in delivery, complained of the “ huge bungling cf the Council in respect to footpaths and streets, which hare never been worse.” Mr Orr compared the salary paid to the tramway manager (£6OO a year) with the £SOO paid to the Town Clerk and £3OO to the City Treasurer and Rate Collector. The two latter officials held the more responsible positions. In the case of the Town Clerk, a false scratch of his pen might, lead to an enormous loss. The City Troasurership and Rate Collector, he held, should he separate, and £3OO for the combined offices was, in his opinion, disgraceful. In view of the high rate of living in Wellington, the wages of Corporation labourers should, said Mr Orr, be raised from 7s to 8s per day. As a result of the Corporation office being undermanned, he instanced the fact that while only £1669 of outstanding rates was recorded in Dunedin, in Wellington the amount was £9876. A unanimous vote of thanks and confidence in the candidate was carried. The public meeting arranged by the Ratepayers’ Association is to take place on Friday evening in the Federal Theatre.
