PEBSS ASSOCIATION. ; MASTERTON, March 28. The District Court opened at Masterton yesterday. In tho charge against J. C. Whitehead for, indecently assaulting Elizabeth Jane Haughton, under sixteen years of age, the jury were unable to .agree, and a fresh trial will take place on Tuesday. This morning the charge against Rhoderick McKenzie for indecently assaulting Clara Weston, was heard. Accused pleaded guilty. After Judge Kettle had commented on the seriousness of the offence, accused was sentenced to seven years’ hard labom-, and three floggings of twentyfive strokes each. DUNEDIN, March 28. The Harbour Board had a communication before it to-day which members did not know whether to treat seriously or otherwise. J. Jameson wrote with reference to utilising the tidal waters of J'hft ,b»y to generate electricity for motive power. ,and asked fov a grant of the use of the waters for n ■considerable distance at the head of the bay, from wliieh he proposes to extract from 1000 to 2000 effective horsepower. Ho looks'forward to the time when the harbour from the city to the Heads will be lighted by electricity, and all the motive power required by the Board obtained from this source. It could also be used for the traction and lighting of trains between Port Chalmers and Mosgiol. Ho further suggests using the motive power from the various bays on tho ccean side of the Peninsula to pump sewage. After some hesitation the matter was referred to tho Works Committee.
