; RUMOURS OF CONCESSIONS , , TO FRANCE. j (Received March 28, 0.15 a.m.) ' SYDNEY, March 27. s A rumour from what he describes as “an exclusive secret service” reached Mr Barton a few days ago to the effect that a, suggestion has been made that tho difficulty over the NowfoundlandPrenoh shore question should bo settled by handing over to Prance British rights in the New Hebrides in exchange for French concessions in Newfoundland. .Mr Barton interviewed Lord H.opetoun on the subject, and the latter despatched a cable to Mr Chamberlain inquiring if such an arrangement was contemplated. Mr Chamberlain has replied that there is absolutely no foundation for the report. ■ t ' (Received March 38, T.lB ■ jkntv) SYDNEY, March 27. Mr Barton states that he is keeping a very watchful eye upon the islands of the Pacific. Ho says the policy of the Federal Government in respect to rhe New Hebrides is that it wishes to sea such steps taken as will secure no." land, passing in such a direction as may tend to fortify claims in respect of interests,antagonistic to those of the Empire.
