GIRLS' ASSOCIATION
Tho anniversary of the ‘Women's Christian: Temperance Union Girls’ Association was celebrated in Trinity Wesleyan Church, Newtown, last night. Airs Schnackenburg presided. There, was a capital attendance of the public. An apology for absence was received from Lady Stout! The celebrations took the form of a. fruit soiree, with music and song and addresses from ladies attending'the Temperance Conference now in session', m ; ■ , Tho Rev- AV, Shiver read tho report, on behalf - of tho lion secretary (Airs Sbirer).. The report stated that there were now forty-five names on the mem-, bership roll. Further aid was earnestly ’invited. Encouragement was being held out to 'girls, who were strangers to tho country andi to tho city. Visitation was ;now being carried on-amongst the girl, members.. . •/. The following were among • the-, officers’ of the Girls’ • Association elected on Saturday, night last: —President,'--Mrs. Wright; vice-presi-dents, Lady Stout) Mesdames Boxall and Janies;’ him secretary, Airs Shirer; Ron treasurer! (Mrs Airs'Wright mentioned, ,in ..an inter, esting account, of the movement which led to fhe formation of the’Girls’ Association and the’ /purchase of the house in-Constable Street; -that -among the tangible results of -the last tjyo 'years’ work were the reduction, of, the ) debt, on the building by £IOO and, the presentation of a piaho ~ to. the association... The speaker, admitted; that . they had-much to learn in,the matter, of classes for the instruction of the girls, but their plans for the' future embraced a. wide scheme for the education of the members in cooking and kindred useful subjects. It was also the intention of the. officials, when the debt - of’£-150 was paid off, to make, suitable, pro vision for boarding and lodging, .certain of the members who might stand in .need of such assistance.
Mcsdames Atkinson and Sheppard and Miss "Powell- then, addressed the (meeting, which closed .with a hearty vote of thanks to Miss .May .Harvey and a number of young ladies who gave a temperance dialogue. • The following contributed vocal and instrumental items during the evening^—Pianoforte solo, Miss Billmaa; recitation, Miss’ Harvey; songs. Miss Steel and Miss Fear.
