A BURNING SHIP
PRESS ASSOCIATION. DUNEDIN. March 25. The fire on the ship Strath Gryfe. which was towed in with her cargo on fire, ha* been extinguished. It was in the lower hold on the port side, aft, among the woolbales, a considerable number of Which were totally burnt. The ship is not much damaged. But for the northeasterly wind blowing she could not have made port in time. , .• , '• , Captain Mcßitchio reports, that on Thursday Smoke was noticed’to be coming out of one of the aft ventilators.., .The after-hatch was at once opened, and dense clouds of smoke issued, from the cargo. The crew in their efforts to locate the lira ran a great risk of Jieing suffocated ~bv the fumes of the smouldering wool.,- It was therefore determined to make for, the nearest port. ‘ : The cause of the fire was probably heating in the wool, of perhaps some was taken on board wet. On Saturday about 200 tons of water was put into the bold, and pumping was continued to-day. -
