THE MUNICIPAL ELECTION

Mr R. H. Davenport, a candidate for municipal honours, addressed a meeting of burgesses at the Victoria Hall, Adelaide road, last night. Mr A. J. Rand . presided. There was a moderate attendance.

v Mr Davenport dwelt at length on the Joan proposals of the city, and expressed himself strongly, on the manner in which the drainage scheme had been carried put. He considered the watsr service, on which it was proposed to borrow £120,000 for extension, to be a good one, well managed. The Karori reservoir .Was 480 ft above the level, and ho thought if an additional reservoir was required f6r storage purposes it could, fce built at a lower altitude. and at less cost than the amount it was proposed to expend. The amount which it was proposed to' borrow for electric light purchases . - £45,000 —would be required for the pur-, pose. He was in favour of £50,000 being borrowed for a Town Hall, and considered this matter would receive the support of the ratepayers when it came before them. It. would be settled before the new Council was elected. When the question, of street repairs came to he considered the'Council would have to improve all streets, not only, the principal ones. If elected to the Council he would endeavour to find rut what >c would cost to repair every street ami footpath. Referring to, the proposal to borrow £75,000 for the purchase of Miramar, he thought it was a beautiful place, but he did not think it right at present*to spend so much money on it He considered the scheme for the widening of Adelaide road had been mismanaged by the Council. • The candidate referred to Fraser’s lane, and expressed the opinion that it should be widen id. It was a slum, and had been one foxyears. The tramway purchase and extension scheme he believed was a p:o----gressivo movement, which had to comp. Tramway extensions had made all the big towns, in the world, and it would make Wellington. On the motion of Mr W. H. Stewart, Mr Davenport was accorded a vote cf thanks. The meeting dispersed at 9.."0 with a similar compliment,, to the ..chairman! ■'
