CITY COUNCIL.

The weekly meeting of the City Council was hold last night. % Leave of absence was granted to Councillor Townsend for the meeting, as the state of his health would not permit him to be present. Councillor Evans said that Councillor Townsend had told him he hoped to be able to attend the next meeting of the Gsuncil. Applications for the post of clerk of works for the Te Aro baths and sea-wall contract, at Clyde quay were referred to ihe Baths Committee, with power to act. Mr W. T. L. Travers waited on the Council, and asked the reasons for taking a certain portion of land at the corner of Rintoul and Riddiford streets, the property of Mrs L. M. Compton. The Mayor suggested that Mr Travers should meet the Street-widening Committee, which had not yet reported to the Council on the matter. Mr Travers said the Council was the tribunal that 3i© had to deal with. His client wanted to know why it was necessary to take | all the land. The Mayor said the Conn- 1 oil was not prepared to give an answer j that night. Mr Travers said his client; was "without official information in regard to what seemed to her an extraordinary action. Ho hoped that some light would he thrown on the matter in a short, time. A letter from the New Zealand Electrical Syndicate with reference bo electric traction for tramway®, was referred to the Tramways Committee. A letter was read from. C. R. Mitchell and Co., asking whether there was any probability of the Council’s letting the old fire brigade station in Manners street. . A letter from E. W. Seaton in regal’d to lighting streets off Adelaide road was referred to the Lighting Commit- • tee. The report of the 'Works Committee was adopted in the following form : That the right-of-way between Moir street and Lloyd sti'et be asphalted,' the residents in the locality having contributed £3 12s 6d towards the cost of the work; that the drain be laid in Mr Swanson’s premises, Sydney street, as previously decided, the City Engineer being empowered to arrange with Mr Swanson; that the footpath on the northern side of Bowen street be form, ed and asphalted ,on the Government lowering the fence and removing the telegraph poles ; that Fitzgerald’s Circus be allowed to perform on the Reclaimed Land , between Mercer street ; and Harris ■'street, on payment of £3 3s per night, and on,'proper sanitary arrangements being made to the satisfaction of the City Engineer.

Councillor AVinder asked .when a report might be expected from r the Streets Committee, as until the report was received the City Engineer could not bring down his estimates. The Mayor said-.that the chairman of the committee had been laid aside, by illness. Accounts to the amount of £Jt4-5 12c 2d were passed for payment. The tenders for annual supplies were referred to a committee consisting _of Councillors Murdoch, Smith and Winder, with nowerto act. The Mayor reported that Councillors Luke and Smith, acting as a committee, had selected a tender for pumping ■ engines. On his motion,- those Councillors were empowered to do all that was necessary in accepting'the tender.
