KELBURNE PARK.

“AN IDEAL SITE FOR THE UNIVERSITY.” I was very glad to see “'Athlete’s' - ’ sensible letter in “The Times,” writes Mr A. Fell. Kclburnc Park is an ideal site for tho University; • incomparably bettor than the Mount Cook cue. While pop;;- ' lar feeling scorned to incline towards tho Mount Cool: sito, I was unwilling to say a word against it; now that that site has boon finally abandoned, I consider myself free to .speak. A great deal of nonsense was talked . and written about planting and beautifying the Mount Cool: site. I know Wellington pretty well, and I know that nothing but a few starved and stunted pine trees could ever bo induced to eke out a miserable existence on that windy clay mound called Mount C: ok. It is set in a, narrow jut between hills to tho oast and west, so that.both north and south winds, whistle round and over it at their own sweet will. The Kclburnc Park site could bo made a very beautiful one, and I can conceive no other purpose to which it could bo put for which it is so well suited as a university. As “Athlete” points out. it must always be useless as a cricket or football ground. If tho gullytolongsido tho Salamanca road were all filled up, a lino piece of flat ground would be available. The City of Wellington reaps tho benefit of the Uni versify, audit has given nothing and done nothing towards it. Let us leave off crying for tho moon, which, after all, is only green cheose, and give freely tho site which tho labour cf the unemployed has already half prepared. Long ago I felt .sure the good sense of tho public would come round to this view In time. Now, with Mr Pharazyn’s generous offer of assistance to fall hack on, I cannot suppose that the obstinacy of a. few will prevail, or that so good a. chance will bo lost for ever.
