; The ■Wellington branch of the s H.A.0.8. Society celebrated the Irish P national holiday on Saturday last. The i members of, the. society assembled at > the Basilica in Hill street, and, headed > by the Garrison Band, .marched in pro-. , cession through the • city to the Basin' ; Reserve, where the usual sports pro- , gramme was carried put. The: St. Pat- . rick’s Handicap was won' by ■F. H. Somers, .of Auckland,'.' who competed , from scratch, and put up some good : performances. Somers also ■•won ’ha silver cup, valued- at £5 fs, presented .by •Mr . George Payne. L. H. Furi'io, of Foxton, won. the 100yds event. He has few equals in the colony at that' distance.’ ‘ P. Mo--0011, of Wellington, won the half-mile, 1 and H. Ward, of Palmerston North,, the mile from scratch. O. B. Burton won the Three-mile Bicycle Handicap easily, but was defeated by Raudrup in the two-miles, after a close finish. The I finishes in most of the athletic events were close. The Garrison Band played' selections during the afternoon, and helped considerably to enliven the proceedings. The success of the affair was in no small measure due to the way it had been worked up by the hon secretaries, Messrs James Stratford, junr., and P. Moroney.
