OBITUARY.

. PRESS ASSOCIATION. BX-PEESIDENT HARRISON.

(Received March 14. 10.42 p.m.) , NEW YORK. March 14.. The death is announced, from pneumonia, of the Hon Benjamin Harrison, es-Presi-dent of the United States; aged 67.

The deceased statesman .was horn at North Bend, Ohio, in 1833, the grandson of the ninth President of the United States. Graduating from Miami University in 1852 he studied law and commenced to practise in 1854 at Indianapolis, where he has since resided. After holding one or two minor legal positions, he resigned in 1862. and entered the army for the Civil War. He was dhpointed Colonel of the 70th Indiana Regiment, which he had assisted to raise. In 1864 Colonel Harrison was placed in command of a brigade, and afterwards saw a considerable amonnt of fighting. The following year, for his services, hd"received the brevet of brigadiergeneral in the volunteers. He first entered into political life in 1876. when he unsuccessfully contested the governorship of Indiana in the republican interest. Five vearsTater. in 1881, he took his seat in the Senate for a full term of six years. In the Presidental contest in 1888 between Mr Cleveland and Mr Harrison, the chief plank of the latter’s platform was the maintenance of a protective tariff, Mr Harrison was elected, and held office until 1892, when he was defeated by his old opponent Mr Cleveland. He then left Washington and returned to his home in Indianapolis. The degree of LLD. was conferred on him Cy the Miami University in 1889.1
