THE NEW PACIFIC LINE. MR SPREOKELsTaND THE COMMONWEALTH. SYDNEY, March 14. Mr J. D. Spreckels has had an interview with Mr Barton, Federal Premier, in reference to the Oceanic Steamship Company. Mr Barton states that no definite proposal has been made, but a further interview has been, arranged. The_ “Sydney Morning Herald/’ dealing with the question of the proposed subsidy Spreckels line of steamers, says s, —“If the steamship traffic between onr ports and San Francisco is large enough to be a matter of any particular concern to us, it is large enough to pay Mr Spreckels without a subsidy.” The “Herald” adds : —“lt must not be forgotten that the American company enters into direct competition with ourselves, while in the Union Company we have Australian enterprise possessing considerable claims upon us.”
