The Rev A. R. S. Holloway (Anglican) is gazetted an officiating minister under the Marriage Act.
Councillor Townsend was unable to attend last night’s meeting of the Gity Ccuncil, ov/ing to temporary indisposition. Councillor W. Moore, of the Carterton Borough Council, v/as a visitor to the Council Chambers during the City Council’s meeting last night. On the motion of the Mayor, the City Council last night passed a vote of con. dolence to Councillor Smith, on, the recent death >cf his only' daughter. Mr J. W. Charleivood has been provisionally recognised as the consular agent of Franco at Christchurch during tho absence of Mr G. Humphreys. Mr J. G. Falder, who has occupied a responsible position in Messrs J. B. Harcourt and Co.’s employ for the past five years, has determined to sever his connection with that firm in order to take up a position in Dunedin. The Rev Harold Peters, who has been pastor ot the Wanganui Baptist Church for the last .seven years, has resigned on account of ill-health. The members of tho congregation passed a resolution expressing deep regret at the necessity for his resignation. Tho “ Otago Daily Times ” authoritatively states that the Hon E. Oliver has forwarded to his Excellency the Governor his resignation of his seat in the Legislative Council. Mr Oliver finds that lie will he unable to return to the colony at as early a date- as was at first anticipated by him.
Owing to urgent business in Wellington, the Minister of Lands has abandoned the remainder of his North Island trip for the present. He left Rotorua after midnight on Wednesday by special train to catch the steamer at Onehunga yesterday afternoon, and will reach Wellington to-night.
His Excellency the Governor lias received information that Lady Raufurly will leave London by the P r and O. steamer Himalaya on tho 21st inst., accompanied by Lady Constance and Lady Eileen Knox, on her return to New Zealand. Her ladyship will travel via Sydney, and arrive in Wellington on 10th May. Towards the end of May Lord and Lady Raufurly will go to Auckland, audl remain to receive the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York. After the excursion of the Royal visitors to Rotorua/, Lord and Lady Ranfurly will come' down to Wellington by the West Coast in readiness to receive them here, the Imperial party coming to Wellington by the East Coast route. The Rev Edward Walker, formerly of the New Zealand Alliance, has, after three years’ absence, principally in tho Old! Country, returned to New Zealand, on account of the feeble nature of Mrs Walker's health. Mr and Mrs Walker were passengers yesterday by the Monowai. While in England, Mr Walker was Provincial Secretary for Yorkshire of the National United Temperance Council, a body whose object is to federate all the temperance organisations, and he brings an honorary commission to see the temperance leaders in the various Australasian centres with a view to securing an Imperial Federation of the temperance organisations. He has interviewed a number of the Australian authorities already on the sffbject.
