The Nicaragua Canal will lie 170 miles long, but only 27 miles will have to be dug. Tbe rest is river, lake, and artificial basins. it will cost ,£25,000,000. Nine thousand one hundred and fifty millions of money passed through the Bankers' Clearing House in 1839, an average of .£258 for every ono of the population. . Owing to the severity of the weather the men at tho Lofigships Lighthouse have been cut off from civilisation. The only hardship experienced was that the men had to smoke hops, coffee and tea-leaves. Out of thirty-nine representatives of various clubs at the recent Waiters’ Congress, only 14 voted for tipping, and 35 against.
