PETONE AND HUTT VALLEY

(By Our Own Correspondent.)

Mr- W. Chapman, who has resided in this district for a considerable number of years, leaves shortly for Palmerston North. Mr Chapman has interested himself very largely in church work, and at a meeting of the session of Knox Church, Lower Hutt, of which he was a member, the following resolution was unanimously carried !-~“Th.«t the resignation of Mr Chapman ftn ft member of Knox Church Session ho received with regret \ and that the session plana on word it* grateful appreciation pf his Jong, fnitlj. ful nmj disinterested services as re-sion clerk, "and. until recently, deacon’s clerk; and prrfy that ho riu! his good wife may b*> long spared to further the interests of tho-Redeemer’s Kingdom A movement is on foot at Pelona to hold children’s sports in oonpootiou with the different Sunday schools .on Easier Monday, Already promises have been received offering to.vv, refreshments, eto,, for- the entertainment, of the children, and there seems to bo little doubt but that the undertaking null prove successful. The report of tho - Potone Football Club to be presented at its annual meeting on Thursday evening congratulates the club on maintaining its position,’and upon securing the third-class champion, ship. The first fifteen, the report states, did not play up to its usual form, only securing fourth place. Since 1897 the team has been returned runners-up twice, and winners onop of the senior championship. The performance was thought highly creditable, considering that the team has had to recruit from tlie junior ranks, unlike the town clubs, which are. able to secure the best talent that came to the city. The committee wishes to impress upon all young players the. necessity for constant training that they may assist the club to main.fain its position. The loss of ten .men by reason of their volunteering for service in South Africa has created a gap which it is expected will he hard to fill. The committee made a new departure in securing grounds for-the junior players at Petone, which proved a'great boon. The club property is in first-class condition, and had been let to the row. ing'olub at a satisfactory rental. The auditors report outstanding subscriptions amount to £lO 8s 6d, which the committee hopes will be reduced. The club record for the season was-.—First fifteen, 63 points for, 67 qgainst; second, 27 points for, 99 against : third, 189 points for, 17 against: Wednesday team, 20 points for =d ■ against:. total, 309, points for and 226 against. The report concludes, by expressing thanks to the officials of the club for their support, to the press, to the Referees’ Association and to the officials of the Rugby Union.
