PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY

The annual meeting of the Wellington Philosophical Society was hold at the Colonial Museum last night. The president (Mr G. V. Hudson) occupied cixe chair, and there was a good attendance of members. The election of the following new members was reported:—Mrs Longton, Hon G. E. Richardson, Messrs C. H. We.vergang and E. G. Brown. The annual report stated that seven meetings had been held during the past rear. Twenty-four papers and notes had been contributed. All of these had been forwarded to tho manager of the New Zealand Institute with a view to their publication in the forthcoming volume of -.ransactions. The minutes and tho discussions had also been sent in for printng. Eight now members had been added” to tho roll during the year, and the society had lost by death a most valuable member in tho late Mr W. Skey. The balance-sheet showed that the receipts for tho year, including the haluice carried forward, amounted to £ll-1 17s 6d, .and the expenditure to £B7 2si Id, leaving a balance in hand of £77 15s id. The Research Fund fixed deposit new amounted to £35 9s lOd, winch increased the credit balance to £ll3 5s 3d. Tho report was adopted on tho motion of Sir James Hector, seconded by Mr Martin Chapman. The following officers ivoro elected for the ensuing year:—President. Mr G. V. Hudson; vice-presidents, Mr H. B. Kirk and . Sir «ames Hector; council. Messrs G. Hoghen, R. C. Harding, H. N. McLeod. R. L. Mcstayer, E. Trogear, Martin Chapman, and George Denton; secretary and treasurer. Mr R. B. Gore ; auditor, Mr T. King. Mr Hudson returned thanks for the honour done him by re-electing him as president. _ ; It was resolved that'.in future tho ordinary business at meetings of the society should terminate alt 9.45 p.ra. A description of a new Ophiurid (starfish), named Amphiura aster, by Mr H. Parquhar. was communicated. The specimen was found near Timaru by Mr A. Haylock. Mr G. Hoghen gave an address on “Recent Seismograms of Distant Earthquakes,” and a discussion followed.

Timpcrlcy.
