TEACHERS’ SALARIES
TKBSS ASSOCIATION.' CHRISTCHURCH, March 12. At a special meeting of the Worth Canterbury Education Board a new scale for distributing the extra Government grant for teachers’ salaries was discussed. The scale had been prepared by the chairman and secretary in compliance with the request of the Government. Formerly the Board decided to adhere to a pro rata distribution of the grant, hut the new proposal, which was adopted, is based on an average increase of seven and a half per cent, on present salaries. It is described as a "pro rata scale with deviations,” and is intended as a kind of comnrom’.ss to as far as practicable meet the wishes of the department. The new scale will be submitted 'to the department. Tae Board decided to protest against the Government withholding about .£SOO of the Board’s proportion of .£BOOO voted by Parliament as additions to salaries. It was also decided that the introduction of a system of bonus on certificates would be inopportune at present and that if infibduced at all it should be preceded by a thorough revision of teachers’ certificates.
