CHESS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, March 9. i The sixty-first anniversary of the founding of the colony was celebrated today by a regatta, which was unavoidably postponed from January fast. The wea- - ther w r as very pleasant, with a light : breeze. An excellent programme of sail- ■ ing and rowing races and side shows had been arranged. Following are the results of the principal events: Yachts, all comers.—Windward, 1. Ifuia takes the race ou time allowance. Half-decked Centre-board Yachts—Flora, 1. Yachts, 34 feet, linear rating— Speedwell, 1; Bulalie, 3. Patiki Race— Rita, 1. Maiden Fours (under lOst), one mile—West End, 1; North Shore, 3; Waitemata, 3. Junior Fours (open)—Waitemata, I; St. George’s, 2; North Shore, 3. 1 STAR BOATING CLUB. i On Saturday afternoon heats of the Se- j nior and Junior Pairs of the Star Boating; Club were rowed off, and resulted as fol-; low:—Senior Pairs—J. S. Fairchild (bow), and A. Fell (stroke) defeated W. D. | Horne (how) and O. R. Bendall (stroke) by two lengths. Junior Pairs—First heat: N. James (bow) and C. B. Dowland (stroke) defeated A. H. Johnstone (bow) and C.. H. Skelley (stroke). Second heat: E. L. Chaffey (bow) and C. Oswin (stroke), 1; F. Matthews (bow) and J. D. Scott (stroke), 2; W. Weston (bow) and W. R. Hackworth. (stroke), 3. Third heat: T. Hamer (bow) and" F. Johnston (stroke), 1; H. Hunter-Brown (bow) and A. McShane (stroke), 2; A. McDonnell (bow) and A. Bayfield (stroke), 3. Fourth heat; G. S. Schmidt (bow) and F. A. Barclay (stroke), 1; F. 11. Taylor (bow) and D. Craig (stroke), 2; H. Johnston (bow) and H. W. Copper (stroke), 3. Mr H. L. Wiggins, deputy-captain," acted as starter, and Mr G. H. Bethnne, captain of the club, was judge. Entries for the McLean Fours will close this evening, and the first heat is to he rowed on Saturday, March 23rd. This will finish the Star Club’s contests for the season. WELLINGTON ROWING CLUB. The Kempthorne Fours were rowed on Saturday afternoon, and resulted as follows: First round.—First heat: G. Spencer’s crew (Player cox) beat A. MoAlpine’s crew (Gosling cox). Second heat: j. Spencer (Gosling cox) rowed a dead heat with A. Hill (Player cox). Third heat: , W. ShiUing (Gosling cox) beat F. . James (Player cox). Fourth heat: W. J. Spencer (Player cox) heat H. McKinley (Gosling cox); H. Jones a bye. Second round.—H. Jones (Player cox) heat G. Spencer (Gosling cox); J. Spen- ‘ cer (Player cox) heat A’. Hill (Gosling i cox); W. J. Spencer (Gosling cox) beat 1 W. Shilling (Player (cox). Semi-final H. Jones’s crew (Player ' cox) won from J. Spencer’s (Gosling cox) . bv two feet.
