Paul Pry had forty lengths’ lead coming into the straight, the others bunched. Passing the stand, Paul Pry had half a furlong advantage. La Carabine and Clean Sweep being together three lengths in front of Advance; At the river, Paul Pry was fifty lengths away, the others being unchanged in position. At the Abattoirs, Paul Pry had thirty lengths’, lead of La Carabine, who was three lengths in front of Advanoel. Paul Pry here fell back, and Advance went to the front, and led into the straight from Paul Pry' and La Carabine. The latter went in pursuit of Advance, who was stopping, and taking the lead at the half distance, won by two lengths. Advance beat Clean Sweep by three-quarters of a length. There was glorious weather for the opening day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s Meeting, The attendance was large, and speculation brisk, the sum of £9667 being put through the machine. Following are the results : Stewards’ Stakes, one mile. —153 Mr E. J. Watts’s Palaver, Bst 21b (F. Davis)) I; 355 Queen’s Guard, 7st 101b,2; 67 Ja. doo, 7st 91b, 3. After a good deal of delay at the post, the field was despatched to a very oven start. Jadoo was first off the mark, followed by Oingo, Palaver, and Eton bringing up'the rear. No alteration took place until entering the straight, where Palaver came very fast, and, wearing down the leaders, won comfortably by threequarters of a length from Queen’s Guard, who defeated Jadoo by a length. Passing down the back stretch, ‘the field closed up, and a quarter of a mile from homo Renown made his run, but Skobeloff and Nobility had too_inuch left for' tho Dreadnought colt. Entering the straight, Skobeloff had a slight advantgc, but here Nobility ran alongside Mr Stead’s gelding. A ding-dong go then resulted up the straight, the judge being only just able to separate the pair, and deciding in favour of Nobility. Renown, was a fair third, 'lime, 3min 9 4-ssec.
