MELROSE BOROUGH COUNCIL

At the fortnightly meeting of the Melrose Borough Council last night, there wore present—His Worship the Mayor (chairman) and Councillors Clark, Highct, Jorgensen, Keene, Nicol, Walter, Brown and Fullford.

It was decided to accept tho tender of Mr P, Carmine (at £69 3s 6d) for work in Garfield and Adams streets, Brooklyn. Tho desirableness- of undertaking formation work at Grafton road, a private read at Rosoneath, was referred to tho Streets Committe to report upon. The clerk was instructed to take immodiato proceedings against two builders, who had neglected to comply with tho regulations of the Council regarding permits to build.

A letter from the Mayor of Wellington, requesting the co-operation of the Council in raising funds for the erection of a- statue to the late Queen, was received, and ordered to lie on the table. The Town Clerk of Wellington wrote, stating that the Council’s committee had under consideration the matter of tramways, and that the Melrose body’s committee would be given an interview so soon as the plans of the City Committee were matured. The clerk was instructed to call for tenders for the formation of Severn street; Island Bay, conditional on £4O of the cost thereof being subscribed by private landowners in the vicinity. The engineer's report on.the matter of works necessary to he dope in the township of Fitchett was referred to tho Streets Committee for consideration.

Councillor Jorgensen asked that a return be prepared and laid on the table, showing the total receipts and expenditure for the financial year, spreacV over tho different wards, and the credit to each ward, if any. He thought it hard that certain parts of the borough should bo specially taxed when they received no benefit. It was finally decided to leave tho matter in abeyance until the Wellington Gas, Company shall have finished its contract.

Accounts totalling £159 7s 4d were passed for payment.
