TO THE EDITOR. Sir—l bare been requested by th<* Queen’s Statue Committee to w.atvc a furtlier appeal to the residents 01 a... Wellington district through M>' crm.nif, Tiio total amount collected to date is some £I3OO, and it is cistnimtoa that at least double tins sura should be raised in order to carry out what is desired. A statue could, of course, bo provided from tlic sum already m nanci but certainly one not worthy or tlic? Sovereign whom it is sought to commemorato, nor of the city which washes to do her honour. Failing, however, a much, more liberal response than hwj been given so far. tlio committee will have no alternative but to make the best of the means at its disposal, thougii the result may he an inadequate ami unworthy memorial. To save the cil>_ from such a reproach is the object m this letter. The committee arc, of course, aware that there have been many calls ot late upon the liberality of the people., ami that money, even for the worthiest, object, is usually raised by moans of impersonal canvass; but they fed, nevertheless, that the present object is ono which constitutes a. special call, mm demands a special effort, and, at tlio same time, that the effort, though special, should bo spontaneous. They are anxious that the memorial to the la to Queen Victoria, in this city should ho dissociated from any semblance or a. struggle between solicitous canvassers and reluctant donors. They are anxious that at their meeting next week they may not be limited to the choice of an inadequate memorial, or distasteful means of raising a worthier one. behalf of the committee. I appeal with confidence to the people to relievo their committee from this embarrassment. Many have given liberally already many more are willing to do so, but are perhaps waiting for the usual personal call. For the reasons above given, tlio committee has decided against this form of solicitation; and trusts that those who are willing to help will spontaneously send on their contributions at once, and enable us to erect a memorial of our late Queen which may not be unworthy of the loyalty and generosity of the people of Wellington.—t am, etc., JOHN G. W. ATTKEN. Mayor of Wellington. Mayor’s Office, Wellington March *l.
