SIR GEORGE O’BRIEN’S SPEECH
The “ Mercantile Guardian”, of London in an article dealing with Sir G. O’Brien’s speech at the Wainibqkasi Hospital, observes:—There' is trouble between Fiji and New' Zealand. There are insults which nothing but blood can wipe out. if we except an apology. Sir George O’Brien, the Governor of F’ji, lias put his foot into it . with a vengeance. He has wounded every tender feeling possessed by New' Zealanders; lie has wantonly libelled them and stamped on their honour. Ls it any wonder, then, that there are wigs on the groan at Wellington? Sir George O'Brien has condemned in strong language federation with New, Zealand. He stated that the New r Zealanders had robbed the Maoris of. their lands, and
t cro desirous of obtaining Fiji lands.Such » recklessly inflammatory speech coming from the 1 merest civilian would he condemned by al .sensible and rightminded men; Coming from’ the G-over-no! of, a. colony it is absolutely- disgraceful, and it is tc 'be 'hoped that Mr Chamberlain will give Sir George O’Brien a severe rep over the knuckles, if he does not recall him—a punishment his offence richly deserves.
