EVENING ENTERTAINMENTS
“PEPPER’S GHOST.” j Local theatregoers will to-night have! an opportunity of witnessing the first j production of “ Pepper’s Ghost ” and I Spectral Opera Company, who to-night appear at tho Opera House in a dramatised version of Charles Dickens’s well-known story, entitled “Marley’s Ghost—or a Christmas Carol.” All the original music—songs and choruses—will be introduced. The character of old Scrooge will be pourtrayed by Mr Fred Smith, who has appeared in it in almost every town and city in the United Kingdom. Mr Smith will be supported ■ by a first-class company. During the drama a, number of astonishing spectroscopic effects and transformations will be introduced. -THEATRE ROYAL. Dix-’A' Gaiety Company performed before a large audience on Saturday night, when a. sketch entitled “School” was put on. The Misses Olive Lenton, Moll to Bentley and Ida Clarkson had good receptions for thoir contributions to the evening’s amusements. The neat dancing of (Miss Lenton evoked special favour. Mu’ Arthur Hahn’s bass songs were, as usual, bright items. Mr Frank Clark awakened hearty plaudits by his Hibernian comicalities. The horizontal bar evolutions of the Patterson ’-Bros. were well up to the usual high standard of excellence attained by these clever performers. CHORAL HALL. i Fuli'cr’s Bijou Company appeared at jthe* Choral Hall on Saturday. night in a/ new programme. The house was Crowded in every part. Mr Fred. jiJlnott, who is such a warm favourite j ./with patrons of the Hall, was again ini { great! request, while the songs, dan-! ' cess and ballads given by Misses Katie Lynn) Jeaunie Johnston, Coralie Barlow, (Madge Lucas, Messrs Joe Watts and Tom Cranberry were loudly applauded. In the second part tho Lester Bros, were highly successful in their; neat and clever double-trapeze
act. Miss; Lucy Fraser-made ner last appearance, and was ' well received, as were the serio-comic efforts of Miss Bessie Young. On Wednesday night ; Mr George Williamson, a clever Aus--1 tralian end-man, will appear. The giant children, Ruby and Wilfrid Westwood, were on exhibition at Meech’s auction rooms on Saturday e\ cuing, when a'large number of people toon advantage of the opportunity of seeing them. They will be exhibited again” this evening .and to-morrow evening. when more room will be available for the accommodation of visitors.
The C. R. Stanford Dramatic Company on Saturday night concluded its Wellington season with a performance of the charming drama, " Shall M e Forgive Tier ?” The company will leave this morning for Mastorton and other country towns.
The Nance O’Neill Dramatic Company will pass through Wellington on the 9fh March, en route to Sydney. Messrs John Fuller and Sons are to open in the Empire Theatre, Castlereagh street. Sydney, on the li'th March.. A three-years’ lease of the property has been taken by the proprietary, and it is intended to maintain there a large company, from which, frequent drafts to the. New, Zealand companies of the firm will be made.
