; Captain Butt, the well-known coastal riilot, has just returned from Auckland. While in the North he saw something of the extensive shipbuilding operations which are carried on there. Lane and Sons, of AVhangaroa, was th» most important of the Northern shipbuilding yards Captain Butt visited. Here a schooner is being built for the Government. which is to be used in tbe trade between Rarotonga and this colony. The vessel is to be a fore - and - aft auxiliary boat, of 124 gross tonnage, fitted with a &4-h.p. American oil engine. The main mast is to be 74ft. and the for-emast 64ft high. Tbe schooner, is to be frame built, with tbe frames of nuriri. and port-cover, her keel being 2Gin by 17iin. all in one piece. She is to bo all copnered with not a single niece of iron used in her construction. In Captain Butt’s opinion she will be one of the handsomest crafts that have been turned out in the colonies. The Messrs Lane have only four and a-half months in which to build tbe schooner, and are consequently working day and night (by electric light) in order to finish her by the contract time.
