PRESS ASSOCIATION. NEW PLYMOUTH, January 18. The annual report of the chairman of tho Harbour Board’ shows that the total trade of the port , last year was 40,408 tons, as compared with 36,322 in 1899. The revenue from dues and wharfage amounted to £6530, against £6081; and the expenditure on dredging to £1458, against £297,0. Despite the fact that the latter item is the smallest since 1895, there is less sand than at any time since the breakwater was built. The report foreshadows the enlarging of the wharf. Professor -Morris, of Melbourne University, who is writing an Australian history of Captain Cook, paid a visit to Cook’s Cove, Tolago Bay, this mornings At a spring on a hillside, overgrown with scrub he found a substantial oaken cask;, - which is thought might have been placed there by the early navigator. On the papa rock alongside another spring were found cut certain letters, believed to be the initials of a member of the crew of Cook’s vessel ' . ASHBURTON,; January*' 18.
