PERSONAL.

Mr G. S. Reston, Governor of Alount Eden (Auckland) Gaol, retires after thirty-throe years’ service. He is to bo succeeded by Mr Severne, of Napier. A Press Association telegram from Auckland states that Lord Beauchamp, Governor of New South Wales, will be the guest of Lord Ranfurly at Auckland next month. Lord Tennyson, Governor of South Australia, will probably pay a visit to Auckland in Alarch. Admiral Pearson is expected to arrive with the Australian fleet in northern waters during April. Lord Beauchamp, Governor of New South Wales, who is to be the guest of Lord Ranfurly at Auckland in February, will probably accompany our Governor on a visit to Huntley, on the occasion of a mass meeting of Alaoris to be held there. The two Governors will also, it is expected, travel to Christchurch to witness the departure of me rough-riding contingent for South' Africa. There were some distinguished personages among the passengers of the New Zealand Shipping Company’s steamer Ruahine, which loft London for New Zealand on the 11th nit. The Duchess of Cleveland jouneyed as far as Teneriffo, and a French nobleman, the Vicomte Gaston de Segur, accompanied by his valet, are booked through to Lyttelton. Air H. H. Pharazyn is returning to Wellington by this steamer.

Air J. McGowan, member for the a mimes, was yesterday sworn in as minister of Alines and Justice. Air Alc- ' Cowan will leave for the Thames to-day for the purpose of transacting some private business before actively taking up the duties of his new position. Air C. Matthews, who was private secretary to the Hon T. Thompson, will act. in a .similar capacity to the new Alinister. The parishioners and friends of the Rev Father Goggan in Te Aro, where he was formerly stationed, will be pleased to learn that after three and a half ■Years’ absence in Blenheim, he will retuiTi to Wellington to resume the duties of his former parish. Father Goggan will be succeeded at Blenheim by the RevFather Servajean, who has been connected with the Te Aro parish for some months.

Miss Christabel Jollie, of Patea, who has been in England for the last three years, will return to New Zealand by the Oruba, which left London on January 19. Bliss Jollie and her sister, it is said, have been following the progress of the war rather anxiously, as a brother, Mr Edward Jollie, is a corporal in the South African Police, under Colonel Walford, and a brother-in-law (Lieutenant Matthews) is with the New Zealand contingent at, the front. There is a good deal of speculation at Homo as to who will be the first Governor of Federated Australia. Lord Onslow and the Earl of Kintore are named, but it is said that Lord Kintorc’s acceptance of the position, if it is offered to him, will depend upon Lady Kintore’s health. Lord Onslow, a, former Governor of New Zealand, has let his home at Clandon Park to an American millionaire, Mr Droxol, for a terra of five years, and it is believed that there is something in his gradual withdrawal from all outside engagements that points to his being the Imperial Government’s nominee for the post. An Italian globe-trotter, on lines made; familiar by several predecessors, has lately reached Australia. Signor Jesse Brandani, according to his own showing, is a native of Pisa , by trade an engineer and newspaper reporter, and •was also for four years the proprietor and editor of the “ Zanzara di Pontedera.” In 1890, being in Paris, he made a wager to the effects that he would travel around the worfd. visiting the most important •ities, without asking any aid from anyone, and will earn his living acting as a “ Trovatore.” In picturesque costume, he i has travelled through America, Africa, Europe and Asia, and is now completing his task. He gives lectures and performances at the various towns visited.
