WELLINGTON SWIMMING CLUB.
ANNUAL SPORTS. The annual sports of the Wellington Swimming Club were held yesterday alternoou in comparatively sheltered water on the southern -side of tho Queen's Wharf. In spite ot the very unfavourable nature of the weather tho attendance was fairly good, the presence of many ladies.gracing the scone. The following is a list ot .the officials for the day :—Starter, Air E. J . Fleming; check starter. Air G. S. Hill; time-keep-ers, Messrs- W. Johnson (Christchurch,). Cl. Clonke and E. J. Fleming; costume stewards, Messrs G. S. till! and A; Ai. Samuel; clerk of the _ course, Mr T. Shields; record board, Mr C. J. Todd; judges, Mvssi's T. Evans, T. Shields and J. T. Gray; press steward, Air G. J. Todd.’ The following is a list "of the events decided:
Maiden Race; -50yds.—B. Johnson, J.: H. Withington, 2; K. L. Bcthnne, 3. Also started — W. (J. Harrington, J'. Levinyolui, F. ■ Weddc, A. \\ iiiiamscn,, S. Melvor and E. Fletcher. The race was a capital one, the winner just pulling ii oil on the touch lino. Time, 37 3-Ssc'c. 100yds Provincial Championship.—(!. A. .Wilkes, 1; it. V s . Logie, 2 ; F. Stroud. 3. Logie looked like winning a good part of the way, but Wiltio overhauls,u and passed hila. in the last few yards. 11. Johnson was the only other starter. .Time, VGsuc. . A comic interlude then followed in the form of a tub race, won by A. Johnson. A. M. Samuel being second. F. Milson also started. Professor Bert Land Mr Samuel also gave an exhibition of the most approved . methods of life-saying, and the former a display of fancy swimming. . A pretty event Was the contest in neat .diving, C. BlackloekVheader deservedly getting the verdict by popular acclaim. C. Jol Imstm was second, and G. S. Hill .and H.'Withington tied "tor third-place-A lofty dive by G. S. Hill from a crane was much applauded. The race tor ’ the Ladies’ Bracelet , •70 yards, evoked keen competition,t— First heat — D. McCullough (6sec)., 1; F. Stroud (3sec), -2; J. Butler (Ssec), 3. Also started—C. W. Neilson, C. Blacklock and J. Sullivan. Time, 58U-Gscc. Second heat—G. A. Wilkea (3sec), 1; G. H. Stubbs (3sec), 2; 'P. -Roberts (6sec),. 3.' ' Also started—J. Leyineolih and W. Rawson. ■ Time, 55 2-ssec. Final—Wilkes, 1 ; McCullough, ■2 ; Stroud, 3. A great race between Wilkes, and McCullough, who fought out every inch to the finish.' Time, -54 sec. ' ■ 50yds, Anniversary Handicap (interclub). —First heat—D. McCullough, 4sec, 1; K. L. Bethuue, 7sec, and J. Butler, 6sec, swam a dead heat for second place. C. W. Neilson, J. Sullivan, W. Rawson and F. Stroud also started. ■•'■■■ Time, SSseo. Second heat—G. H. Stubbs, 2seo, 1; R. V. Logie, 2sec, 2. F. Wilton, W. C. Harrington and T. Gray also .started, Time, 34 3-£sec. Final-—-Lo-gie, 1; Stubbs, 2; Bethune, 3. Butler and McCullough also started. An exciting race and a close finish. Time, 3-isec. A Sea-Horse Race, which created great diversion, was won by A. Johnson,- A. Samuel being second, and T. Gray third. The Greasy. Boom proved too difficult of accomplishment, and after some futile attempts, the few competitors.withdrew. The “Sea-serpent” event and the 50yds Public Schools Championship were withdrawn. The Mitchelltowu Brass Band played a number of choice selections during tho afternoon. "
