Chapman and Mr Woodhouse, mad© orders on two motions in regard to the fixing of costs in the case Eccles and Mills, which was before the Privy, Council some time ago. Court directed how the scale for costs should be arrived at, and ordered that the costs themselves should be settled and taxed by the proper officers of the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court respectively as might bo necessary.

To meet; the requirements of the district; we learn that a Co-operative Dairy Factory Company has just been formed at Levin, with a capital of £I2OO, in 600 shares of £2, each. Already there are evidences of success attending the venture, and much interest is being taken in the company. The provisional directors' are Messrs Palmer, Hawkins, E. Lancaster, S. Cole,’ Burnell, Broadbelt, Hirst and Windeleyer, with Mr T. A. .Hudson as secretary pro tern. A prospectus is now being prepared, and the company hope to commence operations in the spring of the present year.

A’meeting of the Executive Committee of the Kilbirnie TVard Burgess Association was held last night. Mr A. D. Crawford was elected chairman and with the secretary (Mr A..'Jorgensen) was empowered to arrange for a permanent meeting place. Aii executive meeting is to be held ori the last Monday in each month, at which all burgesses are invited to be present! The general meetings of the association are ,to be held quarterly. The objects of the organisation are:—(l) To regularly ' investigate the municipal finance of the ward •- (2) annually .revise the valuation of property for ‘ ratable"- purposes ; (3) supervise all proposed expenditure on, and the erection of, all niuhicipal '-wbrks /! (4) public discussion of all questions vitally affecting the interests of ratepayer's ; (6) the advocacy; df necessary public works and reform in-the tration of the affairs of the ward; (6) generally by all legitimate means to protect the interests of ratepayers and to create and foster a healthy public spirit in all questions affecting the welfare of Melrose Borough. Councillor Izard lias given notice to move at the next , meeting of the City Council (1) “That the Inspector of Nuisances be instructed to report the system hitherto adopted for the collection 'of the tax levied upon dogs, together with an estimate of the number of dogswithin the -city.” (2) “That the City Engineer bo instructed to report upon the probable cost of laying down wood pavement along Lambtoh quay, Willis street, Manners street, and Cuba street, together with an estimate of the maintenance of such pavements.” (3) "That the Engineer be instructed to advise, ns soon as possible, what course the Council should take- to obviate the congestion of' traffic in Willis street; and in the event of. his being of opinion that Harbour street should be widened, so as to enable a portion of the vehicular traffic from Customhouse quay 7 and Lamhton quay-to proceed by _ way of Victoria street, that he be instructed to report Upon the cost; of acquiring sufficient land in Harbour street, to enable this street to be widened.” .

At the Lambton quay Police Court yesterday morning, before Messrs R.Mowaci. . J. Danks and P. Mackenzie, Justices, John Rowe was fined Is, and costs 13s 6d, for driving a vehicle across a railway crossing while a train was approaching, and Is, with. 11s costs, for failing to comply with the railway crossing notice no stop and look out for the'engine. Walter Compton was; fined Is, with, 7s costs, for leaving his horse without control, harnessed: to a vehicle- in Manners street Two men were convicted and, discharged for occasioning a breach of the peace in Riddiford street on the- 22nd of April. George Bell, for allowing his cows to wander on the Karori road, was fined Is, with 7s costs.- - -Frederick Lyness, alias Black, was remanded for a week on four charges -of- - theft. Henry Price, for drunkenness, was fined 10s, or fortyeight hours’ imprisonment. William Foster,;for stealing a pair of boots, received a sentence of seven days’ imprisonment. Joseph McKnigbt to Greytown on a charge ot being about to leave the colony without making provision for bis unborn illegitimate child. Thomas Woods, a fireman on board tbs s.s. Ruahino, was ordered to forfeit- two days’ pay, with an alternative of seven days’ imprisonment, for disobeying the lawful commands of his superior officer.

Office-bearers have been elected for the newly-formed Dunedin branch of the .New Zealand Society for the Protection of Women and Children. .A woman named Mary Emett was arrested at Hunterville the other day on ;> charge of bigamy, and remanded to Palmerston North. Mr* A. S. Baker, of Palmerston North, has received a telegram from Victoria stating that in the match with Camperdown, in which the New Zealand polo team was beaten, Mr J. Strang was suffering from an injured leg, and was unable to play, his, place in the team being filled by Mr W. Strang. Yesterday morning Detective Broberg and Constables McCarthy and Kidd were once more brought before the Magistrate to answer charges of “ tote ” betting, procuring the commission of an offence, and assisting in the commission of a crime. Mr Kenny said he most certainly would not takethe cases after what had passed, and he decided to adjourn them, for two weeks. The monthly meeting of the Eight Hour Federated Union was held-last night. Mr W. E. Shelton (vice-president) presiding. The Hutt and Petone Society of Carpenters" and Joiners wrote notifying the union 1 that- Mr J. Lawton had been appointed its second delegate. It was decided that a letter be forwarded to the employees of the Ballarat Woollen. JMul congratulating them on their action on the recent Eight Hour Day. The executive officers and Messrs J. Hutcheson, M.H.R., J. W. Heaton and W. Naughton were appointed a deputation to wait on the City Council in reference to the charge for the use of the Basin Reserve, and report to the union.* It was decided that the various committees for conducting the 1899 demonstration be appointed next meeting night.
