Tlie first matcli counting for the championship, the Hawke’s Bay Match, was taken this.,morning, and though some good individual shooting was made, taken as a whole it was not much above the average. Bandmaster King, of Oamaru, secured first place with the excellent score of 93 out of a possible 100, which is six points better than the score that won first prize last year. He rung up nine consecutive bulls, and his last shot ■ was only just outside the centre ring. Four other marksmen were only a point behind the winner.

At 4 o’clock'the men retired to 700yds to take part in the Oamaru Match ( which like the two previous matches, counts in the aggregate for the belt.
