THE QUEENSLAND MURDERS.
IDENTIFICATION OF BURGESS. Brisbane, January 24. Several persons without hesitation picked out Burgess, the man lately arrested at Dalby on suspicion, from 15 others as the man who was seen at the slip-rails of Moran’s paddock (whore the Gatton murder took place) night of the tragedy. They also clearly identified him as a»man who was seen elsewhere in . the district about the date of the crime.
MAGISTERIAL INQUIRY. VIOLENT BEHAVIOUR OF BURGESS. Received January 25, 12,20-aro. Brisbane, January 24. The magisterial; inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the murder of Ellen, Norah and Michael Murphy, near Gatton, on the night-of December 26th, haa been commenced, but so far nothing new has been - . • •, : Burgess was under cross-examination at the inquiry. Ho denied that ho ivas near Gatton at the time of the tragedy. He detailed his movements,’ but was unable to say where ho was on Christmas and Boxing Day. He preserved a calm demeanour till a witness identified him as the man who told him that Michael Murphy had been shot before . such’ a thing was suspected. Burgess thereupon became furious, and slashed at the witness, shouting P I’ll dig you in the neck.”
■ The police seized the man, and prevented violence being done - to the witness.
