VOLUNTEER NEWS.

Satisfactory attendances continue at the D Battery’s camp at Miramar, and on a recent visit Lieu t.-Colonel No wall expressed himself very pleased with the way the men went through their drill. The officers have engaged in revolver practice during their stay in camp, and the Battery has been instructed in mounted drill. On Monday and Tuesday the Battery will compote for the Brandon trophy, using lin ammunition, a target being laid at Evans Bay. The Petone Navals intend_ holding a regatta this afternoon, and getting off a number of cutter races. To-morrow the corps will hold a church parade at Petone. The old Navals met in large numbers at the general meeting of the Old Navals’ Association held on Thursday night in the W.N.A.V. boat station. Lieut -Commander Hislop was in the chair. The objects of the Association were pointed out to be mainly of a social character for the purpose of keening old Navals in touch with one another by holding periodical meetings. Members of the present company are entitled to join the Association after being in the company for five years or upwards, and any members of the Petone Navals, past or present, are to be admitted on the same terms and with the same privileges as the Wellington Navals. It was resolved to ask Captain-Commandant the Hon C. J. Johnston to be tho first president of the Association and Captain. Commander Duncan, Lieut. - Commander Hislop and Captain Fitzherbert to be the first vice-presidents. The following officers were then elected :—Secretary, J. Crichton Voung; treasurer, T. H. Woodger ; committee, B. H. Davenport, Harold Palethorpe, J. Scanlon, E. T. Taylor and F. J. France. A vote of thanks was passed to Lieutenant-Commander Campbell for the use of the boat-station for the Association's mootings. The proceedings wore throughout of a most enthusiastic character- The committee afterwards decided to meet on Thursday next. A number of ladies interested in the Volunteer movement have offered to promote a " Ladies’ Prize,” which is to be competed for annually by Volunteers only, under the auspices of the Wellington Eifie Association. The committee who have the matter in hand are Lady Douglas, Mrs R. J. Collins, Mrs G. F. Campbell, Mrs A. do B. Brandon, Mrs H. F. Davis and Mrs J. W. Henderson. A large muster is expected at tho Battalion parade this afternoon. The corps will assemble at tho Drillshod at 3 p.m., and will than bo marched to Upland Farm, where they will be exercised in outpost duties, and posting sentries and pickets. The Garrison - Band and Cycle Corps are not required to attend. Two-thirds of the strength of each company must attend to enable tho men to receive the half crown to be paid for this parade. The Zealandia Eifles will parade at the Volunteer Drillshod at 3 o’clock this afternoon for field work and drill. Provided twothirds of the corps are present each man will be entitled to a remuneration of 2a 6d. Members of the Wellington Navals, D Battery, City Eifles, Wellington Guards and Kelbnmo Eifles are notified that the competition for Government medals by marksmen will take place at the Polhill Gully range at 5 a.m, on Monday, 19th, and Tuesday, 20th, and at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, the 20bh inst. Tho Petone Navals fire for similar honours at the Petone range at S p.m. on Monday, the 19th inst. Each competitor is to take 30 rounds of Whitney’s M.H. ammunition.
