The Railway Department has made provision for tho widow and children of tho late engine-driver (Barker) killed near Helensville. The Minister authorised the payment of ,£SOO compensation, and the widow has been appointed postmistress at Taupiri at a fixed salary with a free house. SUICIDE OP A PARMER. Timaku, May 18. A farmer named T. Palmer, of Temuka, who has been eccentric for some years, and has two or three times been examined for lunacy, blew his brains out in his own house last night. His family were all away. ANOTHER SUDDEN DEATH IN CHRISTCHURCH. Christchurch, May 18. Margaret Madalene Kissel, aged 17, daughter of Mr H, A. Kissel, saddler, of Doyleston, died suddenly at the house of Mrs White, at Sumner, at half-past 2 yesterday afternoon. The deceased was not robust, and had previously been refused a medical certificate of fitness as a school teacher on that account. An inquest will be held. PUBLICAN HEAVILY PINED. Haweba, May 18. At the Magistrate’s Court this morning E. P. Buckthought, licensee of the Okaiawa Hotel, was fined -CIO and costs for permitting drunkenness on his licensed premises. A GHASTLY FIND. Invercargill, May 18. Information has reached town that a coffin containing a skeleton has been found on the beach mar Waipapa Point, on which the s.s. Tarawa was wrecked 17 years ago. Most of those then drowned were buried in ths Tararua Acre close by, bnt whether the sea has encroached on the burial ground or whether the coffin has come from some other place is not yet known here. INVERCARGILL BOROUGH. Invercargill, May 18. The estimates of the Invercargill Borough for the current year show a deficit of 611X0.
