Dunedin, May 17The passenger list of the Union Company’s excursion trip to Tahiti and South Sea Islands by the Waikare is full, and a number of applications had to be refused. About 130 passengers have booked, mostly from Australia, SERIOUS STREET BRAWL. Auckland, May 17. In a street fracas last night Philip Sanford sustained concussion of the brain. This afternoon Edward Trevor wasarrested on a charge of unlawful assault. Sanford remains unconscious at the hospital, Arthur MoKell, arrested on a charge of assault and robbery at Paeroa, has been committed for trial. SOUTHLAND RAILAGE OF GRAIN. Invercaeoill, May 17. Last week was the first of the season in which the railage cf grain exceeded that of the corresponding weeks of the previous year. The grand total, however, is much less, being 202,509 sacks, against 333,744 last year to date. CRUELTY TO ANIMALS. Christchurch, May 17. Four charges of cruelty to animals were brought against Henry Box. a coach driver at Christchurch, to-day. Three were for driving horses at different dates iu his drag to Feudalton while they were not in a lib state to be worked, and the other for working a horse with a galled shoulder. He was convicted and fined £lO, with costs £5 9s, on one of the former charges, the other two being adjourned. CHARITABLE AID DISTRIBUTION STORE. Timaru, May 17. The Charitable Aid Board to-day resolved to establish a store for tho distribution of charitable aid rations for Timaru and suburbs, where the expenditure on rations is about -£IOOO a year. The secretary undertook to receive wholesale quantities and make up ration parcels with the aid of a boy. THE TIMARU HOSPITAL. Timabu, May 17. The Board, after visiting the Waimate hospital, “ a separate institution,” agreed to the demands for refurnishing the wards and postponed the demand for buildings pending further information. One member of the honorary medical staff of the Timaru hospital having severed his connection with the institution, an attempt is to be made to carry on with two visiting doctors, instead of throe. New Plymouth, May 17. The Harbour Board decided to-day, subject to the approval of the Marine Department, to make a 40-foot opening in the breakwater to allow the sand to pass through. This is with the idea of doing away with the sand difficulty.
