The half-yearly report of the London Bank of Australia shows a loss of £4395. The sum of £lßll is recommended to be carried forward. The statement of accounts shows £3,716.087 Government and other deposits 1 £1,498,136 cash, £1.274,401 bills; and other assets £5,740,063. The half-yearly report of the Scottish and Australian Investment Company shows a profit of £7890, and a dividend of 2 2 per cent, is recommended. A sum of £1640 is carried forward. Ottawa, May 14. The United States Government has informed the Government of Canada that there is no prospect of a, commercial treaty being concluded between the United States and Canada, inasmuch as Canada is unable to offer any concessions without Great Britain sharing them. The United States, however, is willing to agree to the appointment of a Commission to enquire into the subject. Adelaide, May 15. As a result of the earthquake, several lighthouse - keepers report that the machinery jis not working satisfactorily, having apparently been thrown out of plumb. Sydney, May 15. Eastern news tolls of a serious outbreak of the bubonic plague at Macao. People are fleeing from the city. At a meeting of butter exporters it was. resolved to forward to the Minister of Agriculture a strongly-worded resolution protesting against the statements which had appeared in the press .to the effect that New South Wales butter exported to London was of inferior quality. The resolution alleged that the statements were quite unwarranted, the producers being entirely satisfied with the prices obtained, and that the statements are calculated to do a large amount of damage to the dairy industry.
