The hawker nuisance is becoming quite unbearable boro. Beside half-a-doxon turbanned Indians, there are several Italians and one or two Arabians canvassing the district. In several oases those hawkers have been most insulting. The police seem powerless to take action, as there is a difficulty in procuring evidence. Constable Lawler, of this town, has been laid up for some time. Ho is now being relieved by Constable Thompson, of Wellington., An enquiry was held by Mr T. Hutchison and a jury on Saturday into the circumstances under which the house of Mr John Butcher, at Kurupuni, was destroyed by fire. The evidence revealed no probable cause for the conflagration, and an open verdict was returned. A young man named Tinsley met with a painful accident the other day.
