BOOKMAKERS’ ADVERTISEMENTS.
Important Decision by tbc Auckland Magistrate. By Tsleyrnph.—Press Association. Auckland, December 15. - Arthur Cleave was. charged at the Police Court to-day with, on 15th October, unlawfully publishing in the Sporting Review and Licensed Victuallers* Gazette an advertisemont with intent to induce persons to apply to Daniel MoLeod and Hobort Cloland, of Auckland, with a view to obtaining information with respect to events and contingencies of horse races. There were two other informations against defendant in respect of M. ’ Barnett and P. Grant and Taylor, of Christchurch. Defendant pleaded not guilty to all throe charges. Mr Tolo appeared for tho prosecution, instructed by the Inspector of Police, and Mr Cooper appeared for the defendant, Hia Worship held that the advertisements wore for no other purpose than to induce people to do business with these bookmakers* Ho fined defendant 20s, with 28s costs, in each case, remarking that ho was taking into consideration tho fact that Cloavo had given Detective Grace every assistance when the latter was making enquiries. ■
