VOLUNTEER NEWS.

THE NEW COMMANDANT. A battalion parade took place last night in the Volunteer Drillshed, when Colonel PolePonton, Commandant of the New Zealand forces, inspected the corps. The strength was s—Wellington Guards, 49, under Captain •Paterson and Lieutenants Duthie and Harcourt; City Rifles, 50, under Captain Duthie and Lieutenant Muir; Garrison Band, 20, under Bandmaster Herd ; staff officers, Lieutenant-Colonel Newall, Major Collins and Sergeant-Major Finn. The Commandant was accompanied by Lieutenant Maddoob. The battalion was put through battalion drill by Major Collins, and company drill by the captains. Before being dismissed Lieutenant - Colonel -Nowall informed the battalion that the Commandant bad expressed himself as being impressed with what little be had seen, and had said that compared with Her Majesty’s troops the drill of the local forces was slow. THE CITY RIFLES. The City Rifles hold a competition for, all classes at the Polhill Gully range on Saturday. Conditions: 300, 50) and 600 yards, seven shots at each range, for A and £ classes ; and 300 and 500 yards, seven shots, for - C class. As will be seen from the scores below some very good scores wore made. Private Hawthorne headed the list for A class with a fine score of 95 points, while Private Wood, a young and promising shot, headed the list for B class with 80 points; The following aro the scores - A Class.

The Wellington Guards’ A and B Classes held their usual weekly competitions for class trophies at Evans' Bay radge on Saturday, when some very good shooting was made. There is one more competition to decide the trophies, and that takes place for B Class nett Friday morning, and for A CldSs the scores at 300 and 500 yards in the match against the City Rifles nett Saturday are to count as the final competition. Halpin. At a competition among tile junior shots of the Wellington Navals for Mr R. Turnbull’s trophy Gunner MoGinity obtained his second win counting for the trophy, with the score of 54 points.
