ALLEGED ROBBERY IN A CAB.

Yesterday afternoon John Gregg was charged at the Lower Court with having stolen £7 from George Campbell on Tuesday last. Campbell, who seemed to be suffering from the effects of drink, deposed that he met the accused at the Royal Hotel the day after ho (witness) had come down from Wairarapa. Witness and accused got into a cab, and while in the cab the accused robbed him of *27 in notes. Witness told him that he would inform the police, but ho only laughed. Witness said he had been drinking of late. Hugh Douherty, cab-driver, deposed having driven the previous witness and the accused in his cab from the Royal Hotel to Lambton quay, opposite Mr Hill's shop. They bought a hat and returned to the cab andf rom there they drove to the Star Hotel, where they all had a drink. After driving to several other places, they left the cab at the Grosvenor Hotel, and Campbell said to the accused, " Give me my money.” The accused replied, I won’t give you a penny until 1 2 o’clock to-morrow.” Altogether they allied at five hotels. Robert Barclay, licensee of the Grosvenor Hotel, remembered Campbell, accused and the cabman coming to his house and asking for drink. He refused to serve them. Other evidence having been heard, accused made a statement to the effect that he and Campbell had gone round Wellington together on the spree in a cab, and had told the cabman to call at all the hotels he came to. Campbell accused him of robbing him, and he replied that he had not got his money. Campbell was spending about *6l au hour while with him. Mr Greenfield committed accused to take his trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court, bail being allowed in two sureties of *625 each.
