Special to the Sew Zealnud Tim°a. Wanganui, September 9. For the three vacancies on tho Borough Council this year there are no loss than nine candidates, one of whom is a lady, Mrs J. T. Stewart, wife of Mr J. T. Stewart, chairman of the Wanganui Kivor Trust Board. It is understood that strenuous efforts will be made to influence tho Borough Council to give notice of their intention to take over the local gasworks and plant next jear, in terms of the agreement between these bodies. The agreement gives the Council tho right to take over the works and plant at cost price, l2ss 2 per cent, per annum for depreciation, the valuation in the event of a dispute to bo determined by arbitration. Tho requisite notice to the Gas Company must be given in December, 1597. It is undoubtedly a matter of tho greatest possible moment to tho ratepayers that the borough should avail itself of its lights under tho agreement, and it ia hoped that no vested interests will be allowed to stand in the way of making tho gasworks a municipal concern. Whitebait are beginning to make their appearance in tho river, and already some largo hauls have been made. The Chamber of Commerce are preparing a memorial to tho Minister of Lands drawing his attention to tho urgent necessity of completing tho bridle track connecting tho Pipiriki and Pampara roads, some miles of which are already constructed, and the metalling of tho PipL-riki-Karioi road.

Lily Bank farm, of 400 acres, one of tho most compact and desirable farms in tho district, is to be sold by auction on tho 10th October, Lily Bank is well known as the property of tho late Mr John P. Watt, and is to bo sold in pursuance of a settlement of the estate. It is understood that Mr S. Gibbons, of Marton, proprietor of the White Hart Hotel, is lighting the hotel with electricity and has imported the necessary plant for that purpose. Mr E. H. Witt, who recently sold Ins tobacconist's business in this town has, I undeistaud, taken a hotel in Nelson. The Patea Dairy Factory has started the season by paying 3d a gallon for its milk supply. It ia understood that the proprietor hopes to increase this price slightly later on. Mr 13. C. Horner has boon appointed secretary of both tho Patea East and West Hoad Boards, vice Mr D. M. Harris. Tho Boards are . claiming on tho latter's guarantee his defalcations. Mr Harris* present location ia unknown. In tho recent case for alleged unskilful treatment, Tuku Wunu v. H. Diorka, tho defendant gave evidence that “ lie was anxious that a doctor should bo called in, but nevertheless felt confident that if tho Lord God would bless him ho could euro the case, but ho did not trust in his own power alone!" He was ordered to pay £SO damages and costs. Tho Collegiate School here has recently been provided with throe additional classrooms, tho labour being mainly done by the boys themselves. Tho finished building is well constructed, and a credit to its youthful builders. The Wanganui Public Museum lias been recently enriched by a presentation of eight large volumes of Captain James Cook's voyages, of the original editions. The public are indebted for this valuable present to the generosity of Mr Charles Smith, who has always taken a great interest in our Museum.
