Fourteen of the leading English cricketers were chosen from whom tho final selection of tho AU*England team was to be made, but Lohmanu, Rougher and Mold, three of the best bowlers, were rejected, all were slightly lamo as the result of their work in county matches. , , 1 Critics blamo tho Selection Committee for tho paucity of tho bowling element in the English team. The weather and the wicket remained perfect throughout tho day, and there were 10,945 people who paid for admission. Iredale and Giffen played all tho bowlers with freedom except Grace, and the veteran frequently puzzled them. , , , Giffen batted for 10 minutes short of a couple of hours for his 80 runs, and never gave what could bo called a chance. He hit 12 fours. „ ~, With Iredalo and Giffen well set there were frequent changes in tho howling, and was tried, but no separation was effected until the score stood at 232, when Iredalo attempted to cut a straight ball from the Lancashire professional, and retired. The retiring batsman had boon at the wickets for two hours and 20 minutes, and though he made a few uppish hits in the slips, they fell clear of any of tho fieldsmen. He hit twelve fourera, but tho majority of the runs were obtained by neatly placing the ball to square leg. Trott and Gregory hit out merrily while associated, and knocked up their runs in o2 and 40 minutes respectively. Lilly, the wicket-keeper, was put on as a last resource, and Brown donned tho gloves. This pair, between them, brought about the downfall of Trott. Hill and Dorman carried on tho score to 314, when the latter was yorked by Eichardson. ~ , Hill was out after another run was added, and Triimble subsequently played a fast one from Richardson on to his wicket.
