Press Association. Stratford, July 17. At the Police Court to-day, B. E, Phillips, storekeeper at .Strathmore, was charged on throe informations with sly grog selling. He pleaded guilty to one charge, and tho other two charges were withdrawn. Tho Stipendiary Magistrate fined him JUO, saying he would make the fine light, as it was the first offence. Auckland, July 17. There is no sign of the San Francisco mail steamer. Woodvili-e, July 17. Mr Thomas Sexton, of the Woodville Chess Club, has won the first and third prizes in the Leads Mercury chess problem competition, open to tho world. Christchurch, July 17. Captain Kiddey, for many years publican at Lyttelton and latterly secretary of the Canterbury Licensed Victuallers’ Assotion, died to-day. Dunedin. July 17. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Poultry Association to-night, it was decided that the next championship show be hold in Auckland. Mr Hesteven was re-elected secretary.
