Lord Salisbury states that the occupation of JDongola secures the protection of the frontier and is a preventative to Dervish raids, and further that it will be the means of opening up the Nile valley. He adds that at present it is not intended to advance further, but says that until Khartoum is occupied Egypt will not be safe.
