Press Association. Auckland, October 16. At the Police Court two men, Thomas Smith and Anthony Hopewood, stowaways by the Tarawera from Sydney, were fined 40s, or 14 days’ hard labour. Smith made some unpleasant remarks on His Worship’s ruling, and Mr Northoroft ordered him to be brought back, and asked him what he had said. Accused said he had only remarked that he wanted work, and now he had got it. His Worship said he had a good mind to increase the fine and the term of imprisonment. Thomas Wood has been committed for trial on a charge of breaking and entering the premises of Sin Kee with intent to commit theft. The schooner Christina has been floated off Eangitoto reef, and towed into harbour between two scows. A young man named Thomas Tinley, for disturbing the entertainment of the Tivoli Company last night, and addressing insulting remarks to the performers, was fined 40s, but having no money was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment. For drunkenness he was fined 40a, or seven days’ imprisonment. Dunedin, October 16. The Education Board passed a resolution to-day expressing the deepest regret at the sudden death of Inspector William Taylor, and placing on record its high opinion of the services he rendered as , schoolmaster and inspector. The resolution is to be sent to Mrs Taylor. Napier, October 16. Part of the clothing and swag of a man supposed to be named Kose has been found on the bauk of the Tutaekuri. The river is being dragged for the body, but so far without success. His brother was sent to an asylum last week, and he was suffering from melancholia.
