New Pltmouth { August 7. ; 'lnformation was received ,in town this morning that Constable Seymour, stationed at Pokearuhe, was found dead in a paddock near the school-house with a bailee wound through his forehead,, and a revolver lying by-his side.' No/ cause is assigned for the act. Seymour was in town three weeks ago, ,whsn ho appeared hearty and well. Sergeant Baffin leaves by train for Fukearuhe, where an inquest will bo held. . -
[Deceased, Cecil Raymond Seymour, joined the Permanent Militia (Engineer Corps) on July 5,185 G, and was transferred to the Wellington police on October 25, 1887. > In September, 1888, he was removed to Palmerston North, and thence to Pukearnho in October, 1889. He was 48 years of age. He leaves a widow and one child.].
THE TARIFF. , _. Dunedin, August 7. At a special meeting of the Chamber of Commerce to consider the tariff,, the following, resolutions were passed:— ; 1. “That the Chamber urges upon the . Government the desirability of postponing the operations of the tariff as regards the iurticles upon which it is proposed to make concessions until January 1, 1890, in order to permit of the present duty-paid stocks being quitted." , 2. “ While affirming the principle of the previous resolution; it has been represented that woolpacks hold a peculiar position on account of an entire season’s supply arriving during August and September, and the Chamber therefore" recognises the dcair-
ability of putting them on the free list forthwith.”
3. “ That as tho Legislature appointed the Tariff Commission to take evidence from importers and manufacturers as to tho working of the tariff, the Government be urged to take into consideration the recommendations so made with a view to rectify existing anomalies.”
