OBITUARY.

MR ROBERT M. GREENFIELD,. J.P. Another, of Wellington’s old residents Ijas -passed away, -Mr , Robert Mackay Gjreofifield, wh ose d e ftth occurred ftt his residence' -iu Ijpper -\yillis istreet .ftt; fi o’clock j yesterday - morning).. Last December Mr Greenfield, owing to ill-health, paifi a yisit to. his brother, LieutenantDolonol Greenfield, in Australia, remainin'- until March of this-year, but the change did not benefit him. He bad been confined to his bod for the past five weeks, and notwithstanding that ,ho received every possible attention from Dr Franco, ho gradually sank and died. Mr Greenfield leaves one son and .throe daughters, his wife, having died about . five yearsago. Mr Greenfield was 02 years of age, bpiug born at Borwiok-6n-Tweed, Scotland, on May oth, 1833. In 1856, in company witlfthis-firotlior) bp left Soqtl,an4,fc(r: Melbourne, and) after speqcpUg ftfffiUh four years on tho Australian goldfields ho came to Otago at tho time of the Dnnstau rush. In 1805 Mr Greenfield settled iu Wellingitdn, and, with Mr James Stewart, entered into business as sawmillors. and timber merchants. In 1878, Mr Greenfield retired from tho firm, which has since been" carried on under, the style of Stewart aud Co. Deceased was greatly ; interested in local politics, and formerly occupied a seat tire City Council for 11 years. He was also an aspirant for Parliaipontary honours, standing fop the Te Aro division of the city, but was defeated. With Dr Grace and JJr James Stewart 1 IJr • Gretmfjeld owned the city tramways. Ho also had large interests in: the Waipaoa estate, Poverty Hay. hfr Greenfield was one of the promoters of the Gear Company, and uqtil the time:of his death was one ot its directors. He was also a director of the National Mutual Life Association, hut owing tq Ris ill-health he resigned about a year ago, - Ho -was ope of the first directors of the Equitable Building and Investment Company, a company which ho assisted in establishing. Mr Greenfield was greatly esteemed in business circles, and in private life was one of the mqst liberal , and kind-hearted of men. Mr Thomas Smith, a well-known Foilding resident, died yesterday morning, only three days after the death of his wife. . Mr Smith was uno of the first settlers on the Manchester Block-- He and his sons were actively) engaged in contracting for road making .for several years. He served in H-M. 14th Regiment of Foot. The funeral of Mrs Smith was to have taken place yesterday, but has boon postponed in order that husband and wife may be in-, tprred together.
