EDUCATION BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Education Board was held yesterday. The members of tho Board present wore —Rev J. Paterson (in tho chair), Dr Newman, M.H.R., Messrs W. A. Fitzhorberfc, F. 11. Fraser, W. W. McCardle, J. Young and W. C. Buchanan, M.H.R. It was announced that the overdraft amounted to JU9O 5s 9d. The payments required 'voro- -Capitatlon account, J3390S 7 s lOdj and building account, .£9l Is ; making a total of <£4ooo 8s lOd. Mr Young brought up the case of Mias Jessie Monorieff, a pupil-teacher at Carterton, who, at tho suggestion of tho headmaster of her school, had visited town on several occasions in order to acquire knowledge of the Kindergarten system of education. The young lady had had to pay her own train fares, &0., which he regarded as decidedly hard. Mr Young moved that Miss Monerieff’s actual travelling expenses be allowed, This was agreed to. The resignations of Miss Ellen J, Howan, Kereru, and Mr Ealph Haybittle, pupil teacher at Mount Cook School, were accepted. On the motion of Dr Newman it was decided to allow the Council of the Middle District University College to moot in the large hall of the Education Board’s building on the 4th July at 10.30 a.m. It was decided to leave tho application of Mr H. H. Dyer—who asked for an additional week’s holiday—in the hands of the chairman and secretary. It was decided to alter the winter vacation to later in the year on account of the bad weather. On tho motion of Mr McCardle it was decided that the chairman and tho mover should act as a committee to enquire.into the appeal of Mr John Scarlf (Hastwoll), who protested against tho expulsion of his daughter from the Hastwell School. Mr Chas. Staff was appointed pupil teacher at Levin.

It was decided to adopt the desire of the Manriceville School Committee, and transfer the present pupil teacher of tho school as soon as the chairman of the Board •could find a suitable teacher to replace tho present teacher. The chairman and Mr McCardle were authorised to effect repairs to the teacher’s residence at Mauriceville, such repairs not to exceed ,£SO. A letter was received from Mr R. Acheson (Carterton) as to the recent election of the local committee. It was decided merely to acknowledge the receipt of Mr Acheson’s letter, but to take no further action. Mr Savage, chairman of tho Kaitoke School Committee, waited upon the Board and asked that tho salary of Miss Hamilton, tho teacher of the Kaitoke School, should not be reduced as had been intimated. Mr Savage said the present teacher would bo compelled to leave if her salary was reduced, and then the school would assuredly languish and eventually become extinct. Tho Board decided not to reduce Miss Hamilton’s salary. Tho request of the Greytown School Committee, that a local constable bo appointed as truant officer, was agreed to. Repairs, amounting to .£29 7s Gd, to the Korokoro School were ordered to. be effected. The Ngaturi School Committee were invited to send in a plan of the proposed shelter-shed, and the Board authorised tho expenditure of .£lO on the proposed work. It was decided to connect the water supply with the school at Cross Creek, and to leave tho question of building now outbuildings at Hastwell School to the chairman and Mr McCardle. On the motion of Dr Newman, the chairman, Mr Fraser and the mover were appointed tho Board’s delegates at the approaching conference of the education boards of the Colony. It was decided to pay thefent of an aided schoolroom at Makuri. The question of clearing the site of the proposed now school was held over. On the resolution of Mr McCardle, the offer to clear tho school site at Matarau at 35s per acre was accepted, and tho sum of .£SO was granted in aid of the proposed school house. A shelter shed was ordered to be erected at Waihenga, and -61 was granted for gravelling purposes. The question of painting the Karori School was deferred to next meeting of the Board. The Board then went into committee.
