MR HOGG AND HIS CONSTITUENTS.

From Our Own Correspondent. Masterton, January 19. Mr A. W. Hoggj addressed the electors in the Masterton Theatre Royal on Friday evening. There was a very fair attendance! His Worship the Mayor (Mr G. Heron) presided. Mr Hogg referred at considerable length to the legislation introduced by the present Government, and maintained that tho Liberal policy was patriotic and self-reliant. He commended the banking legislation, and said that the Bank Guarantee Act had saved the Colony from ruin. Ho eulogised tho Government for its financial operations, minting out that the net debt of the Colony ■ jad been materially reduced, whilst money ’or public works' had been obtained without going on ter tho London market. Mr Hogg supported tho Government in ■ its Native land purchases and other purchases of land, but claimed that the manner in which tho Lands Department was dealing with special settlers would prove reactionary. The railways, ho urged, should not be out of the hands of the ■ Government, and should ho u?od. not so much for creating revenue as for developing tho industries of the Colony.
