HARBOUR BOARD.

THE WOEK OF THE TEAR. The monthly meeting of the Wellington Harbour Board was held yesterday afternoon. Present—Messrs J. Jack (chairman), B. Pearce, J. Heaton, F. H. Fraser, C. W. Brown, J. Petheriok, AV. Booth, Captain Eoso and the Mayor. The chairman stated that the result of the year’s operations, ' after making: provision"' for ail debits, gave a balance of £1414, as compared with .£758 in 1893, and of .£2458 in 1892. The depreciation allowed for amounted to .£0921, of which .£3396 was expended jn maintenance and repairs, leaving the net amount written off for depreciation at .£6525. The tonnage of shipping arriving at the port had, for the first time, • run into seven figures, as follows —1894, 2384 vessels of 1,026,008 tons; 1893, 2232 vessels of 932,182 tons, being" an increase of 52 vessels, and 93,816 tons. The receipts from the Harbourmaster’s Department amounted to £6,058, being an increase of £564 on the previous year. The tonnage, of cargo handled on the wharves inwards, and transhipped, amounted to 173,026 tons,-as compared with 163,660 ton;! 7 in 1893, an increase of 9357 tons. The exports,- foreign and coastal, amounted to. 47,797 tons, as compared with 43,346 in 1893, an increase of 4451 tons. The shipment of bales of wool" and flax amounted to 114,626 as compared with. 115,850 in 1893, the decrease being 1224. Hemp had dropped from 35,675 bales in 1893 to 9848, a decrease of 25,827. Wool ha'd increased from 80,175 bales in 1893 to 104,778. This was largely due to the present wool season having commenced -early and having been pushed on so rapidly. , The ChairmatJdjnade the following financial statement: —Bank balances ; Credit balance to current account, £1927 7s 8d; credit balance to imprest wages account, £200; amount at fixed deposits, £36,000. Amount required for payment —Accounts and wages, £3915 8s 4d; salaries for January, £4Ol 2s 3d; progress payments, oncontracts, £1271.143 sd: total, £5588 ss, The Chairman reported that in accordance with the powers vested in him under section 3 of the Local Bodies Audit Act, 1888, he had postponed the annual meeting for - the production of the audited accounts' for 1894, from the 14th January until a day to be hereafter notified, when the ac-r counts shall have been received duly audited. •“ . The Wharves and Accounts Committee recommended That a newspaper stall be erected at the barricade on the Queen’s Wharf in accordance with the plan laid on the table* by the Engineer; and that tenders be called for its occupation for a term - -of three years with power to the Board to resume on giving, three months' notice; that the Board consent to the cancollation. of foreshore license No. 34 held by Mr Bernasconi for a boatshed at Clyde quay, and to the issue of one in place thereof to Mr J. D. Dimond, and that the seal of the Board bo affixed to the new license; that the by-laws relating to dairy produce transhipments as printed and circulated to-, the members of the Board-be approved and ■ advertised to come up for adoption at a subsequent meeting; that the special Board meeting required to be held subsequently to the 20th January and prior to the Ist day of February to confirm the roll of electors being payers of dues, be hold on Tuesday, January 29th, and that at the same meeting the dairy produce transhipment by-laws be adopted ; that the monthly meeting for February be held on Tuesday, 26th February, the day appointed for the election of chairman, in lieu of Thursday, 28th February.
