THE SHOP HALF-HOLIDAY.
■At a meeting of the Christchurch City Council on Monday night, two petitions, signed by 738 shopkeepers and shopassistants, were in favour of Thursday; but another asking for Saturday was signed by 2645 citizens, including shopkeepers and shop-assistants. We are requested to remind shopkeepers that clause 10 of the Shops and ShopAssist; .nts Act provides that “ in the event of any day other than Saturday being appointed by the local authority as closing day under this Act, thou any shopkeeper shall bo entitled to close his shop on Saturday in lieu thereof, bn giving notice to the inspector of his desire to do so. Such ■ notice shall be lodged with the inspector during the month of January in each year, and shall be taken as proof of the facta therein stated.” By Telegraph,—Press Association. The second meeting of the Borough Council to consider the half-holiday question has, like the first, resulted in a fizzle, not having been called in accordance with section 110 of the Municipal Corporations Abt. The consideration of the question has now boon postponed till the 29th inst. Dunedin, January 16. The half-holiday was generally observed to-day throughout the city. -
